Why does long sitting hurt the lower back?
According to medical references, sitting in one position for a long time is a common trigger for lower back pain, like lifting something heavy or a sudden movement.
The World Health Organization lists low physical activity, obesity, smoking and physical strain at work among the risk factors for lower back pain. So the starting point is changing the habit: move regularly, sit with back support, and keep a healthy weight.
Lumbar vertebrae — the lower back supports most of your body’s weight
Office workers, drivers, delivery riders and students
Office workersGet up and move during the working day; don’t stay in one position for hours.
DriversOn long journeys stop and walk every hour, and don’t lift heavy items straight after a long drive.
Delivery ridersGet out and move between deliveries, and bend your knees, not your back, when lifting parcels.
StudentsMovement breaks while studying, and a chair that supports your back.
Correct sitting at the desk and in the car
1Top of the screen at eye level, about an arm’s length away
2Chair back supports your lower back — or use a small cushion
3A 2–3 cm gap between the seat edge and the back of your knee
4Keyboard just below elbow height
Simple moves on your chair
Chest stretchSit upright away from the chair back, stretch your arms out to the side and gently push your chest forward. Hold 5–10 seconds, 5 times.
Torso twistArms crossed on your shoulders, turn your upper body to the left without moving your hips as far as is comfortable, hold 5 seconds, then the right. 5 times.
Knee liftHolding the sides of the chair, lift one bent knee as far as is comfortable and lower it with control. 5 times each leg.
Use a stable chair without wheels. Stop if the pain gets worse and see a doctor (NHS).
Hours behind the wheel? On long journeys, stop and walk every hour.

Is it a slipped disc or sciatica?
Lower back pain from sitting does not necessarily mean a slipped disc (herniated disc). If the pain is only in your back, it is probably not sciatica.
Sciatica is irritation of the nerve that runs from the lower back to the foot. Its sign is a burning pain down the back of the leg, usually one leg, with tingling, numbness or weakness. If it does not improve within weeks or gets worse, an examination can find the cause.
When is lower back pain serious?

Get an urgent assessment if you have a fever, chills or feel generally unwell, or severe pain that started suddenly or is getting worse quickly.

Why does my lower back hurt when I stand up after sitting for a long time?
Sitting in one position for a long time is a common trigger for lower back pain. It is usually not caused by anything serious and often eases when you get up and move regularly. If it lasts for weeks or comes with tingling in the leg, an examination can find the cause.
Does lower back pain from sitting mean I have a slipped disc?
Not necessarily. In about 90% of cases of lower back pain no specific structural cause is found, and the orthopedic doctor assesses this by examination.
Do I need an X‑ray for back pain?
Not always. Medical guidelines do not recommend routine imaging for every back pain; the doctor decides after the examination, and the X‑ray department is in the same building.
Is walking good for lower back pain?
Usually, yes. Long bed rest is not recommended, and walking is one of the activities that may help. Stop if the pain gets worse.
How long does lower back pain last?
Most people improve within 4 to 6 weeks, often sooner. If it has not improved after a few weeks or it stops you from your daily activities, see a doctor.
What are the Orthopedic Clinic hours at Al-Taawun Branch and how much is the consultation?
Dr. Eyad Maraashi sees patients Saturday to Thursday from 2:30 PM to 9:30 PM. The consultation is SAR 100, and the SAR 196 offer (instead of 300) covers the consultation and the X‑ray together until 30 October 2026 for cash payment. Prices exclude VAT.
What is the correct sitting position in the car to avoid back pain?
Move the seat forward so you don’t lean forward while driving; on long journeys stop and walk every hour, and don’t lift heavy items straight after a long drive.
Lower back pain with tingling in the leg: when should I worry?
Pain with tingling in one leg may be sciatica, which usually improves within weeks to months; see a doctor if it does not improve or gets worse. Weakness or numbness in both legs, or changes in passing urine, is an emergency.
